COL Marcus Jones enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve in July 1990, serving as both an Administrative Specialist (71L) and a Psychological Operations
Specialist (37F). Upon receiving a U.S. Army ROTC Scholarship, he attended the University of Arkansas and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Field Artillery in August 1994.
COL Jones’ first assignment was to the 24th & 3rd Infantry Divisions at Fort Stewart, GA, where he served in a variety of troop assignments and deployed to Kuwait. He commanded Service Battery, 1st Battalion, 17th Field Artillery, and B Battery, 6th Battalion, 27th Field Artillery at Fort Sill, OK. Following battery command, he served as a Unit Trainer for 1st Battalion, 141st Field Artillery (LAARNG) in New Orleans, LA. While assigned to the 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, TX, he deployed in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM (OIF). Upon redeployment, the brigade moved to Fort Carson, CO, where he served the Battalion S3 and Executive Officer for the 3rd Battalion, 16th Field Artillery, again deploying to Iraq. He served as Chief, Doctrine Division for the Fires Center of Excellence before commanding 1st Battalion, 19th Field Artillery, Fort Sill, OK. His other staff assignments include 1st Armored Division Chief of Fires; Eighth Army (8A) Fire Support Coordinator and Director of Fires, Yongsan, Seoul, Republic of Korea; Programme Director, NATO Joint Warfare Centre, Stavanger, Norway. Currently, COL Jones is the Senior Army Advisor-Guard (SRAAG) to the Arkansas Army National Guard (ARARNG).
He holds a Bachelor’s in Political Science from the University of Arkansas, a Master’s in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College, and a Master’s in Management and Leadership from Webster University. He is married to the former Carrie Hunton of Prairie Grove, Arkansas; they have two children, Will (20) and Abby Grace (17), and a very old Schnauzer named Guinness.
