Joel K. Tyler

Major General (Ret.) Joel K. Tyler is a distinguished alumnus of the University of Arkansas Army ROTC program and a career Armor officer whose leadership and operational expertise shaped modern military operations across multiple combat theaters. Commissioned in 1988, MG Tyler’s career spanned 35 years of dedicated service to the U.S. Army, culminating in his role as Chief of Staff of U.S. Africa Command, where he oversaw critical military operations and strategic partnerships across the continent.

Born and raised in Pocahontas, Arkansas, MG Tyler earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Arkansas. As a cadet, he served as a Cadet Major and S-5 (Public Relations Officer), demonstrating early leadership skills that would define his career. He was also actively involved in campus life, serving as a Student Government Senator and a leader within Sigma Nu fraternity.

Throughout his military service, MG Tyler commanded at every level, from leading an Armor platoon during Operation Desert Storm to serving as Commanding General of the U.S. Army Test & Evaluation Command, a role critical to modernizing the Army’s capabilities. His extensive combat experience includes multiple deployments to Iraq and the Middle East, where he held key leadership roles during Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Spartan Shield, and Operation Inherent Resolve.

His significant command positions included:

  • Commanding General, U.S. Army Test & Evaluation Command

  • Commanding General, U.S. Army Joint Modernization Command

  • Deputy Commanding General, 1st Armored Division

  • J-3 Director of Operations & Cyber, U.S. Africa Command

  • Chief of Staff, U.S. Africa Command

Recognized for his exceptional service, MG Tyler was awarded numerous decorations, including the Army Distinguished Service Medal (1 OLC), Defense Superior Service Medal (1 OLC), Legion of Merit (2 OLC), Bronze Star Medal, and Defense Meritorious Service Medal.

Beyond his military service, MG Tyler holds advanced degrees from Central Michigan University (M.S. in Public Administration) and the Naval War College (M.A. in National Security & Strategic Studies). His commitment to leadership and service continues in retirement, where he remains active in veterans' organizations such as the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

A devoted husband and father, MG Tyler and his wife, Stacy—a University of Kentucky graduate and Ph.D. holder from Kansas State University—have two daughters, Caroline (College of the Holy Cross, Class of 2022) and Sophia (University of Vermont, Class of 2025). Now retired in Falls Church, Virginia, MG Tyler’s legacy of leadership, integrity, and service continues to inspire future generations of Razorback Battalion cadets.
